The crime statistics are out and no surprise, murders in the City of Ft. Myers have tripled.  Although in the rest of Lee County was down thirteen percent, in the city violent crime was up.  There was and increase in aggravated battery, aggravated assault and homicide.

Thefts were also up in Ft. Myers probably due to the economy and a ten percent unemployment rate.

As a Ft. Myers criminal defense attorney I have seen a rise in people getting arrested for theft crimes as well as sex crimes.  The simple fact is that in hard times desperate people do desperate things.  When you are out of work and dead broke it is easy to fall victim to temptation.  Hard times also result in an increase in arrests for domestic violence.  Husbands and wives under the stress of trying to make their bills often turn to alcohol and the combination of stress and finances results in arguments and fights.

The simple fact is good people get arrested when 911 is called.
